You’ve made the exciting decision to elope—yay! And now you’re here, wondering what comes next. Totally fair. Eloping in the Great Smoky Mountains can feel both dreamy and daunting, but I promise it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Here’s a guide to what you actually need to make it happen, what you don’t, and a little shameless plug for yours truly—because this is exactly what I do through my all-inclusive elopement packages. Whether you’re planning your own little mountain escape or looking for a helping hand, these tips come straight from someone who’s both a seasoned elopement photographer/planner and a lifelong East Tennessean.
1. Marriage License
You’ll need to obtain a marriage license from the Sevier County Clerk’s Office in Tennessee, where most popular entry points into the park (like Gatlinburg) are located. Here’s what to know:
- Both parties must be present to apply.
- You’ll need valid photo IDs (a driver’s license or certified birth certificate will work).
- Out-of-state residents may pay a slightly higher fee.
✨ Psst: If you book an all-inclusive package with me, I guide you through this whole process.

2. National Park Special Use Permit
Planning to elope inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? You’ll need a Special Use Permit:
- The permit typically costs $50–$150, depending on your location.
- Applications must be submitted at least 14 days before your ceremony.
- You’ll need to select from a list of pre-approved ceremony locations.
- GSMNP SUP Guidelines + Locations👇.
💁♀️ Don’t worry—this is also something I handle for you when you book a package with me.

3. Officiant
Tennessee’s officiant rules can be confusing, I know. Whether you want a family friend to officiate or you’d prefer to leave it to a pro, here’s the deal:
- Tennessee recognizes ordained ministers and public notaries as legal officiants.
- My go-to officiant is Alan Eleazar, a kind and experienced officiant who’s part of my vendor team.

Beyond the Basics – Elopement Extras That Add the Magic
The legal checklist is actually pretty short—woohoo! But here are some of my favorite optional touches that elevate your day from special to unforgettable:
📸 Photographer and/or Videographer
Okay, I might be biased, but this is a big one.
Documenting your elopement means being able to relive the moment again and again. And in this area? You’re in good hands. There are so many talented photographers and videographers who specialize in Smoky Mountain elopements—including me and my husband, Andrew! We offer both photo and video coverage as a team (or you can book us separately if needed). This is our passion—preserving memories you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
💐 Florals
I am a flower girl through and through. A bouquet adds beauty and gives you something to hold during portraits—it’s such a lovely detail that doesn’t have to be stressful.
I partner with Rainbow Roots Floral Co., a flower farm based right in our hometown of Maryville, TN. Savanna and her team take your vision and turn it into something stunning, using locally grown, in-season blooms.
💡 Tip: Want to save money? Choose in-season flowers. (Hint: ordering peonies in January = not ideal!)

🍰 Cake
Let’s talk about cake! No, I’m not suggesting a towering, three-tier wedding cake here—I’m talking about a sweet, simple 6-inch cake just for you two. It’s the perfect treat to cut and enjoy later that day (or the entire week of your trip).
I work with a fantastic local bakery, Art of Cakes, that offers amazing flavors, gorgeous designs, and even gluten-free options. They also make cupcakes, cookies, and other goodies if you want to mix things up.

🎉 Other Fun Add-Ons
Here are a few more creative extras that past couples have loved:
- Charcuterie cups or boxes (perfect for a snack before or after your ceremony) my favorite to order from is Amazing Graze, Knoxville TN
- Champagne or a celebratory drink
- Hair & Makeup styling – I have two vendors I work with
- Bridal and Beauty with Em – Emily Hartley
- Chop Chop Beauty Club – Samantha Youngblutt
