The Backyard Wedding That Actually Worked (and Why I’m Hooked)

Let’s Talk Backyard Weddings

I hear a lot of hate around backyard weddings—and honestly? Some of it’s totally fair.

They can be really hard to plan. And without the right vendors, they sometimes end up looking, well… a little thrown together. There’s this common belief that backyard weddings are always cheaper—which can be true, but not always.

For the record: I’m not a full-service wedding planner. I mainly plan and photograph elopements and very intimate weddings. But after capturing Jess and Murphy’s backyard wedding reception, I can confidently say: I’m hooked. And if this is what backyard weddings can be? Give me more, please.

Here’s how it all came together, what I learned, and some thoughts to help you decide if a backyard wedding is right for you.

Backstory: J + M

I’ve actually known Jess and Murphy for a while.
I first met them years ago, back when they had just started dating and I had just started my photo biz. They modeled for my very first styled shoot in Nashville—a dreamy day with beautiful light, other creatives, and so much heart. (I’ll add throwback photos here—you have to see it!)

Even then, I knew these two were special. And I’m still proud of the photos we created together back in 2021.

Fast Forward to Fall 2024

Jess and Murphy eloped in March of 2024. Six months later, they called me up:
Would I be available to photograph their intimate backyard reception in the fall?

My answer: Absolutely yes.

I knew Jess’s style aligned perfectly with mine, and I was so excited for a little trip out west (West Tennessee, that is) for a day filled with love, laughter, and intentional celebration.

The Day: Thoughtful, Beautiful, and Full of Heart

We started the day with a quiet first look at a local state park—an important spot, since it’s where they had eloped earlier that year. The stone Presbyterian church, the glow through the stained glass windows—it felt sacred. Quiet. Intimate. Ethereal.

Then, we headed to Jess’s mom’s house for their backyard reception. The setup was incredible:

  • String lights everywhere
  • Gorgeous tablescapes and floral décor
  • A full bar
  • Dance floor
  • Catered food
  • A photo booth
  • Even high-end portapotties for guests (yes—because that stuff matters!)

Every detail was thought of. And I could feel the love that went into it—not just from J+M, but from their families and community.

Thinking About a Backyard Wedding? Here’s What to Know:

1. Trusted Vendors Are Everything
This is true whether you’re having a 200-person lakeside wedding, an intimate mountain elopement, or a backyard reception. Build a vendor team you trust. Having professionals who know how to guide you, problem-solve, and support your vision is everything.

Want some amazing vendor recs? I’ve got a list of favorites I trust with my whole heart—just reach out and I’ll send it your way!

2. The “Little” Things Aren’t So Little
When I planned my own wedding, I thought it meant candles, cute linens, signature cocktails. But it also meant:

  • Feeding guests
  • Keeping food warm
  • Planning for restrooms
  • Lighting when it gets dark
  • Bugs (hello, summer in Tennessee)
  • Keeping drinks cold
  • Rain plans
  • Ceremony vs. reception space
  • Talking to neighbors and checking HOA rules

These are the behind-the-scenes logistics that matter. Don’t skip over them.

3. Be Honest About Guest Count
How many people can your backyard realistically hold? Be honest. Don’t try to squeeze in more than what your space can comfortably allow. A packed backyard isn’t cozy—it’s stressful.

4. Know Where the Sun Is
This is one of my top tips as a photographer. Know where the light is throughout the day. Are there trees for shade? Is there direct harsh light during your ceremony time?

I always do a 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm sun check at new locations to help clients plan the best flow (and lighting!) for their day.

5. Know Your Budget—Do the Math
Yes, you’re not paying for a venue. But if you’re renting tables, chairs, lighting, sound equipment, tents, etc.—those costs add up fast. Sometimes it’s actually more affordable to rent a small venue that includes those basics. Just run the numbers before making any final decisions.

Final Thoughts

Backyard weddings can be stunning, meaningful, and deeply personal.
But they’re not easier or cheaper by default—they just come with different challenges and joys.

If you have the right space, the right team, and the right mindset?
It can be a total dream.

Jess and Murphy’s celebration was proof of that—and I’m forever grateful I got to be part of it.
